As part of the changes to the new 2016 EV Rules, 4.1- Baseline Snowmobile Year restricts us to models from 2012-2016.
The main purpose of this rule, as we understand it, is to prevent teams from continuing to compete with successful sleds year after year. If a team (like ours - Queen's) has come very, very close to passing safety inspection in recent years but has yet to be successful, is there any way there could be an exemption or change to let such a team enter their older sled? Otherwise this rule may prevent teams from competing who have put years of work into older sleds without yet passing and using them in the competition. Thanks in advance for your help, Siobhan Powell - Queen's Fuel Cell Team

Dear QueensFuelCellTeam,
Please submit your rules inquiry via the new process recently communicated to all teams. The official website saecleansnowmobile.com is now operational for all teams to submit rules inquiries and will also be used for document submission later this year. If no one from your team received my email with instructions for access to this website then please contact [email protected]. Sincerely, Kaley Zundel CDS Program Manager, CSC

This rule was not created to prevent teams from continuing to compete with successful sleds year after year. It was created because SAE International does not want teams to take an old and possibly used sled that may have structural problems from many seasons of use. Please detail the use life of your sled so that we make an informed decision on whether to allow your sled to compete.

In reviewing the intent of the rule for a relatively new snowmobile
chassis, this is mainly an issue with IC sleds who do see considerably
more miles than a ZE sled would see in 5 years. ZE snowmobiles that
attended CSC 2015 last March experienced very few miles. This exception
is granted for Queens. We will review the age of the sled and its
structural condition. The judges will revisit this rule for the ZE
sleds and come up with a compromise for the future.
Note: Do not post further rules questions to this site. They will not be answered here. See Kaley's note regarding how to post a rules question. Jay |
